How to make "Indian Whiskey"
« on: January 08, 2008, 01:59:09 PM »
From a 1880(ish) recipe displayed in the Fort Benton, Montana Territory museum:

Indian Whiskey:
To muddy Missouri water, add 1 quart alcohol, 1 pound rank black chewing tobacco, 1 handful red peppers, 1 bottle Jamaica ginger and 1 quart black molasses.
Mix well and boil until strength is drawn from tobacco and peppers.

My family recipe called for adding the grain alchohol after boiling and straining. This results in a stronger brew as the alcohol doesn't evaporate during boiling.

The family notes also indicate that this should be diluted with water or beer when giving to children before bedtime.

Howdy Hedmaster, et al,

I actually made a batch of the above mentioned liquor about 25 years ago during my "Mounting-man" phase. I was a drinker in those days and even I couldn't stand the stuff. It was horrible. My recipe was almost identical but without the ginger (and rattlesnake heads).

We called it Trade Likker and I guess the idea was that it was the cheapest way to get liguor for trading with the natives and really hard up trappers. I don't recommend it.

Add alcohol last after the brew has "aged" and cooled overnight.  Thin with water as necessary until it has a translucent carmel color.
