From "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", 1948.  Perhaps the most incorrectly quoted western movie line of all time....

"Badges? We ain't got no badges.  We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any steenking badges...."

One of my favorites is from Print Ritter(Robert Duvall in Broken Trail at the gravesite of one of the Chinese girls lost along the trail to Sheridan Wyoming)
"We're all travelers in this world, from the sweet grass to the packing house, from birth 'til death, we travel between the eternities."

From John Wayne's "Big Jake"

"Now you listen to me!  Any mistakes, your fault, my fault, nobody's fault, I'm going to blow your head off!"

Also from Big Jake, and the line I quote most often -- underlined:

John Fain (Richard Boone): "Who are you?"

Jake (John Wayne): "Jacob McCandles."

John Fain: "I thought you were dead."

Jake: "Not hardly."

John Wayne had some great moments-

In The Searchers, when he didn't agree with a voiced opinion      "That'll be the day..."
In The Undefeated, when asked why he shot a bandito              "Conversation dried up..."

Robert Mitchum and George Kennedy in  The Good Guys and the Bad Guys
explaining why it is not a good thing to jump from horse back to a train
"Yup he jumped from his horse for the moving train and missed-"
"All they found of him was a grease mark along the cindered tracks"  (paraphrased a mite)

(From off camera, usually as the BG is raising his hand to strike the fair Lady)  "I wouldn't do that if I were you!"

I first heard that line uttered by Tim McCoy but have heard Gary Cooper utter it also.

 Hmmm

why? because

why? because I asked

why? because I thought it was a good idea

why? because I think it fits better here

why? because I started the thread in the first place

why? because classic movie lines are one's personal reviews and memories that honor parts of stories that somebody else took the time to write, which is part of the idea behind the Writers Line Shack

Wisdom for the ages - - -

A wise old owl, sat in an oak.
The more he heard, the less he spoke.
The less he spoke, the more he heard.
Now wasn't that a wise old bird.

Miss Eula Goodnight, 'Rooster Cogburn'

Written by Martha Hyer & character "Rooster" as suggested by Charles Portis

Eula Goodnight was played by Katharine Hepburn, a truely classy lady.
Let us not forget the Duke - John Wayne -  as Rooster.
Released November, 1975 - some 34 years ago this month.
